Hydrostatic or not
Tip 0015

If you are planning to cut hay, plow fields or do other traditional tractor work, the hydrostatic transmission is probably a poor choice. Anytime a tractor is going to spend the majority of its life in one gear a standard transmission is the best choice.

Unlike cars, which change speed via the throttle, tractors typically leave the throttle set and change ground speed via the transmission. Depending upon the transmission and the operator's ability it may be difficult to change gears while the tractor is moving. Having to stop and change gears may be frustrating to a novice operator.

Hydrostatic transmissions are not easily kept at one speed. The amount of pressure on the pedal will need to be changed in order to maintain a constant speed. Cruise control will lock the pedal in one position but terrain and PTO load change. Cruise control is not sophisticated enough to maintain a constant speed in these conditions.

On the other hand, a hydrostatic transmission is ideal for loader work and lawn mowing. Anytime frequent changes in speed and direction are needed the hydrostatic transmission is ideal. Hydrostatic tractors are the only compact tractors, which are able to dig in a pile of dirt without riding the clutch or spinning the tires.

When loading or mowing the operator can use his foot to control speed and direction leaving his hands free for other tasks. This transmission is similar in operation to an automatic transmission in car. You can change speed, steer, and drink a cup of coffee. Hydrostatic transmissions also provide a live PTO.

The hydrostatic transmission is ideal for people who cannot drive standard transmissions. There is no need to learn how to operate a clutch and shift a transmission. Just push on the pedal and go.
