Snowblowers
Tip 0020

There are two main types of snowblowers available for compact tractors. Front mounted and rear mounted. Most are two-stage and perform well in most snow conditions. In coastal Maine we find many people prefer to push their snow with a bucket or a blade. Blades and buckets can be overwhelmed when the snow is deep or the driveway is long. We often get ice, wet snow, rain or any combination of these, which are difficult for snowblowers. Snowblowers are also useful in heavily landscaped areas because the snow does not have to be pushed off the driveway.

Front mounted snowblowers are ideal for long driveways that are in heavy snow country. The front mount snowblower allows the tractor to be driven forward. This is a big advantage when moving a lot of snow. Depending upon the tractor the front mount snowblower may or may not be compatible with the front loader. Even if they are compatible the change takes some time.

Rear mounted snowblowers are more popular than front mounted snowblowers for a number of reasons. Rear mounted snowblowers are often less expensive than front mounted snowblowers. Rear mounted snowblowers will fit on any tractor with a three point hitch and PTO*. Possibly the most important advantage of the rear mounted snowblower is that the loader remains on the tractor. No matter what snow or ice comes the tractor is ready to go.

*A live PTO is recommended.
